Essential Visitor Information
A History of Boudhanath
Layered, mythological, and contested — spanning potentially 1,500+ years.
Origins
The Poultry Keeper's Legend
The most popular founding legend involves a woman named Kangma (or Jadzima), a poultry keeper who asked the king for land to build a stupa to honor the Buddha. The king granted her as much land as could be covered by a buffalo hide. She cleverly cut the hide into thin strips and encircled a vast area — enough to build the enormous stupa. Her four sons are said to have been reborn as great figures in Tibetan Buddhist history, including the famous teacher Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), who brought Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century.
CE
Early History
The exact origins are murky. Some Tibetan Buddhist texts claim a stupa was first built on the site in the 5th century, during the reign of the Licchavi king Sivadeva. Others suggest it was built to enshrine the remains of the Kassapa Buddha — a predecessor to Shakyamuni. The stupa may have been an important waypoint on the ancient trade route between Tibet and India, which passed directly through the site, giving it early commercial as well as religious significance.
Century
Medieval Period & the Malla Kings
The stupa rose to major prominence during the medieval period under the Malla kings, who ruled the Kathmandu Valley from roughly the 12th to 18th centuries. It became a critical stop for Tibetan traders carrying salt, wool, and other goods southward into India, and it accumulated enormous wealth through offerings and commerce.
Century
Major Restoration
The stupa fell into significant disrepair over the centuries and underwent major restoration in the 19th century, largely funded by a Tibetan merchant named Chonzed Kunga Gyaltsen. Much of the current structure reflects that restoration.
1959
Tibetan Diaspora & Transformation
The most transformative modern chapter came after China's annexation of Tibet in 1950 and the Tibetan uprising of 1959, which sent the Dalai Lama and tens of thousands of refugees into exile. Many settled in the Boudhanath area, transforming it into the largest Tibetan diaspora community in the world outside of India. Over the following decades, more than 50 Tibetan Buddhist monasteries were established in the immediate vicinity — representing virtually every major school of Tibetan Buddhism. This reshaped the site from a regional pilgrimage destination into a global center of Tibetan Buddhist culture and learning.
2015
The Gorkha Earthquake
The 7.8 magnitude Gorkha earthquake in April 2015 caused the spire — the tall tower above the dome — to collapse, along with portions of the surrounding structures. Restoration was funded through a combination of the Nepali government, UNESCO, and private donors — particularly from the Tibetan and broader Buddhist community worldwide. The stupa fully reopened in November 2016.
Ongoing Significance
What makes Boudhanath unusual historically is that it has never really been a "dead" monument — it has been in continuous active use for centuries, accumulating religious meaning with each generation. That living continuity is arguably as important as any single historical event in its story.
