Guru Lhakhang Monastery
Also known as Tamang Gompa. One of the oldest monasteries by the stupa, situated just north. Named after Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava). Active daily rituals open to respectful visitors along the kora.
Jhamchen Lhakhang Monastery
Sakya-lineage monastery on the western kora. Houses a remarkable 12-meter gilded Maitreya (Future Buddha) statue. Four Guardian King statues mark the entrance. Active pujas and ceremonies.
Thrangu Tashi Choling Monastery
Kagyu-school monastery facing the eastern gate of the stupa. Home to nearly 250 monks. Significant learning center for Tibetan language, English, and Buddhist philosophy. Active and welcoming.
Shechen Monastery
One of the Six Mother Monasteries of the Nyingma tradition. Founded 1695 in Tibet; rebuilt 1985 in Boudha by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Stunning murals, golden statues, traditional arts schools. Cafรฉ in courtyard. Visitors welcome.
Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling
The 'White Monastery.' Built 1974โ76 by Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche; inaugurated by King Birendra. 200+ monks. Kagyu/Nyingma tradition. Home to Rangjung Yeshe Institute offering Buddhist Studies degrees. One of Nepal's largest monasteries.
Tharlam Monastery
Sakya-lineage monastery originally founded 1436 in Kham, Tibet. Rebuilt in Boudhanath in 1981. Known for studious serenity and space for meditation and retreat.
Dilyak Dabzang Monastery
The oldest original Karma Kagyu monastery in Boudha, established in 1963 by the 7th Dabzang Rinpoche. One of the most historically significant monasteries in the neighbourhood.
Samtenling Gompa
Peaceful retreat tucked in a quiet alley near the stupa. Dedicated to meditation and Buddhist philosophy. Occasionally hosts open teachings, pujas, and meditation sessions for respectful visitors.
Tibetan Monastery
One of several Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the Boudha area. Active community with regular pujas open to visitors.
Palnge Monastery
Monastery offering a quiet space for practice and reflection. Visitors welcome to observe morning prayers.
